Premium LCD TVs have split into two genuinely different camps. Sony is using independently controlled red, green and blue backlight elements, while TCL is betting on ultra-dense Mini LED plus new quantum-dot color technology.
That makes Sony Bravia 9 II vs TCL X11L more interesting than a simple brand comparison. Both can reach around 4,000-nit-class HDR highlights in the right setup, both are built for bright rooms, and both try to bring LCD closer to OLED-level contrast. The route is completely different.
Bravia 9 II is the more controlled, processing-led flagship. X11L is the more aggressive hardware package, with many more dimming zones, four HDMI 2.1 ports and a 144Hz panel. 🎯

True RGB Mini LED vs SQD Mini LED
Sony changes the backlight itself. Bravia 9 II can drive red, green and blue Mini LED elements independently, giving the processor more control over the color of the light before it reaches the LCD layer.
TCL keeps a blue Mini LED light source, then uses Super Quantum Dots and an upgraded color filter. The goal is similar: wider color and stronger HDR without giving up the huge zone counts TCL can achieve with Mini LED.

HDR brightness: both are genuinely 4,000-nit-class TVs
On our 65-inch Sony Bravia 9 II test sample, TVComparePro measured roughly 4,000 nits on a 10% HDR window in the accurate Professional-style HDR setup.
On our 75-inch TCL X11L test sample, TVComparePro measured about 4,100-4,200 nits at 10% in the higher-output HDR setup. The same X11L can measure much lower in restrained or default picture configurations, so the setting used still matters.
In practical terms, the important point is that both TVs can operate in the 4,000-nit class on a 10% HDR window. The difference between them is far smaller than a wider estimate would suggest, and picture mode, tone mapping and local-dimming behavior matter more than a few hundred nits either way.

The useful difference is consistency. Sony holds bright outdoor scenes extremely well. TCL can look spectacular, but its biggest boost numbers are not what we would use to describe normal movie viewing. ☀️
Local dimming: more zones do not automatically mean a better picture
TCL has the huge numerical advantage. X11L officially uses 11,520 zones at 75 inches, 14,400 at 85 inches and 20,736 at 98 inches. Sony does not publish equivalent counts. On our 65-inch Bravia 9 II test sample, TVComparePro counted about 1,530 physical dimming zones.

X11L’s zone precision is genuinely excellent, but tiny stars and subtitles can still reveal blooming. Sony can bloom too, especially off-axis. The important point is that the driver and algorithm matter alongside the raw count. TCL wins density; Sony is unusually good at extracting performance from fewer zones.
Color and bright-room viewing
Both TVs deliver unusually wide color for LCD. In our measurements, the 65-inch Bravia 9 II lands around 88-90% BT.2020, with near-complete DCI-P3 coverage. Our 75-inch X11L lands in the high-80s to low-90s for BT.2020 depending on the measurement method and picture configuration. TCL can have a slight gamut advantage, while Sony is stronger for accuracy, tone mapping and difficult skin tones.
For bright rooms, raw nits do not tell the whole story. Sony’s Black Screen Pro coating on the 65, 75 and 85-inch models is exceptionally effective at suppressing direct reflections. X11L also has a low-reflection treatment and enormous brightness, but Sony can look more composed when windows or lamps sit directly opposite the screen.

Gaming: TCL wins the hardware layout
For one PS5 or Xbox, both are fast enough. In our tests, Sony posts slightly lower lag in common modes, but it still gives you only two full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports, with one shared by eARC.
TCL gives you four HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K120 console support, 4K144 on PC and lower-resolution 288Hz accelerator modes. That is much easier for a PS5, Xbox, gaming PC and soundbar in the same setup. 🎮

Processing and motion: Sony’s strongest argument
Bravia 9 II is excellent at low-quality content cleanup, upscaling, gradation, motion handling and deciding how aggressively to use the backlight from scene to scene. That matters because a flagship spends more time showing streaming, broadcast sports and compressed 4K than test patterns.
X11L has improved significantly and its Pentonic 800 platform enables the stronger HDMI layout. The weakness is that TCL can still look less settled in difficult dark scenes, very fast motion and aggressive brightness transitions. Sony is the safer choice if image consistency matters more than feature count.
Practical setup notes before changing picture modes
Do not judge either TV in the brightest showroom preset. On Bravia 9 II, start with the accurate Professional-style HDR preset and the recommended local dimming behavior before changing tone mapping.
On our 75-inch X11L, Peak Brightness and boost settings change HDR output substantially. In a restrained Filmmaker setup we measured around the mid-2,000s at 10%, while our higher-output configuration pushed the same TV above 4,000 nits. The setting difference is the reason both results can exist on the same sample.
For gaming, connect the console directly, enable 120Hz and VRR, then add the soundbar or receiver. On Sony, eARC uses one of the two HDMI 2.1 ports. TCL’s four-port layout avoids that bottleneck.

Price and size can change the winner
Sony launched the 75-inch Bravia 9 II at $4,599.99 in the U.S. TCL launched the 75-inch X11L at $6,999.99, but TCL has already used very aggressive discounts. Current street price matters more than launch MSRP.

Which one should you buy?
Choose Sony Bravia 9 II if you want the more refined all-round picture. It is stronger for processing, motion, direct reflections and predictable HDR behavior. For movies and mixed streaming, it is the safer premium choice. 🎬
Choose TCL X11L if you want four HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K144 PC support, HDR10+, huge dimming-zone density and a 75, 85 or 98-inch screen. When discounts hit, its value argument becomes much stronger.
The surprising part of Sony Bravia 9 II vs TCL X11L is that the brightness battle is almost a draw in our high-output HDR tests. Sony’s real advantage is consistency. TCL’s real advantage is hardware flexibility and scale.
